So we know the real reason why Green MEP Caroline Lucas missed the Bali Conference last week. Originally, it was widely reported that she was to miss it for high minded reasons involving her carbon footprint in travelling half way round the world. A strange argument given that several other Green MEPs were attending. But I think I know the real reason for her absence. Last Thursday there was a local council by-election in Brighton which the Greens were defending. And of course this is in the only parliamentary constituency the Greens have an outside chance of winning. And the PPC for that seat is none other than Caroline Lucas MEP. You can imagine the rumpus from the local party if at the time of the important by-election she had been in Bali. So for all the apparent high-mindedness, it was really just down to basic electioneering, essentially the same reason she is supporting the building of Brighton’s new football stadium on the greenfield site at Falmer. A whiff of Green hypocrisy from Ms. Lucas methinks.
